Jiu Jitsu
We are coming to the end of the year here at Beyond Kung Fu Studios and that means, as always, the start of another new year. With the start of this New Year will come some much anticipated changes at the studio.
You may have heard rumours and rumblings throughout the studio over the past few months about a new program starting in January. And we are very pleased to say that the rumours are true. New for January will be Beyond Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
You may be wondering “How is that new, we already do grappling?”, and that is a very valid question. Because of the depth of Jiu Jitsu, what we have been covering in our regular program is just the proverbial ‘tip of the iceberg’. By participating in our Jiu Jitsu program not only will you dramatically improve your learning curve on the mat but you will also be learning techniques and strategies that we simply don’t have the time to cover in other classes.
In addition to learning advanced techniques and getting more mat time you will also be able to progress up the Belt Ranks of BJJ through our affiliation with Professor Dan Moroney of Bravado Jiu Jitsu.
Because of our already busy evening schedule the bulk of the Jiu Jitsu classes will be during the day. We will be holding classes on Wednesday and Friday @ 12:30 PM regularly. To make the class available in the evenings we have made some slight adjustments to the current schedule. The Tuesday Adults Self-Defence class is now Jiu Jitsu Basics’ and the Wednesday 7 PM Adults Advanced is now Advance Sparring Applications. In order to attend either of theses classes you must have achieved the appropriate rank and be a member of the Black Sash Club.
Daytime classes will also be available to Black Sash Club members whose schedule allows them the opportunity. So if you know someone who has been looking for martial arts but couldn’t find day classes or if you or someone that you know is interested in finding out more information on the upcoming Jiu Jitsu program please speak to Mr. Lugsdin or call 905.452.7150.
Attitude
Are you like most people, do you wait until you have a reason to smile? Do you believe that the health of your body is a determining factor when it comes to your emotional state? Is your attitude dependent on your results each day? If you answered yes to any one of these questions then, like most other people, you may be travelling through life backwards. That’s right backwards. Most people are unaware of the fact that good results in life are born from a great attitude towards life.
Your internal attitude directly affects your external demeanour which in turn has a tremendous influence as to the manor in which people will receive you or your communication to them. To put it simply; if you have a bad attitude internally it shows on your face in your body and in your communication and people will respond to you in kind. Meaning, they will treat you like you have a bad attitude. You will also attract people with similarly bad attitudes, and the snowball gathers speed from there. But there is a better way, understanding and accepting the fact that we create our own reality is a tremendous start. Taking action to create the world we desire living in is the next step.
So how does one go about changing the entire world? They don’t. They change the world around them and as a direct result they change their own perception of the entire planet. The question still begs, how do they change their world? The answer is simple, from the inside out! Each day when you awaken take a few moments to set a positive intention for the day. Notice the events that you have scheduled each day and the people you will meet with, imagine what the most successful result from each of those encounters would be. Expectations build results. If you expect success then you are more likely to create it for yourself and others around you, if when you look to your future you expect turmoil well you can have that all to yourself. This does not mean that blinding yourself to the reality of life’s ups and downs will make your life better. But it does indicate that if you maintain a good attitude regardless about the rollercoaster ride of life that you just might enjoy it a little bit more.
I am not telling you that I myself am always in a great mood, but when I am not I don’t carry my mood around for everyone to see. There are times and places and situations where it is completely appropriate and even expected that you will share or vent your emotional frustrations or insecurities. This is one way that close friends, family and in some cases therapists can support someone. Acknowledging and talking about fears or insecurities often helps an individual realize that they are not founded in reality and therefore should be of no real concern. When one is relieved of their insecurities they become more confident about themselves and as a result begin to develop a better attitude about themselves and their situation in life.
If you remember anything from this little rant, remember this; the foundation of any good result in life is a great attitude towards life. So if you want to improve the life that you are living, improve your attitude towards others and yourself.
Chunking
It sounds kind of funny, right? The first time that I saw one of my teachers write that on the board I laughed to myself wondering ‘where is he going with this?’ If you knew this teacher then you would know how limitless the possibilities are.
His name is Garry Johnson and the course I was attending was one that was focused around technology known as Psycholinguistics. In laymen’s terms it is the language of the mind. I know, I know, you already know what language your mind speaks, right? Wrong!
The fact is that if you already knew exactly what language best suited your mind then you would have no problem achieving all of your goals. You would simply set a plan in action and the rest would be automatic. You see, what we tell our minds consciously may not be what our mind is hearing or believing at the subconscious level. And it is important to realize that what is taking place at the subconscious level can often over power or negate what we may tell ourselves consciously. You see there are very few people who plan to overeat, be late for work, injure themselves or become addicted to drugs. Yet these are very often behaviours that become repetitive patterns throughout people lives. They may complain about the results and wish for something better, but if they don’t look at the root cause, the unconscious mind, they are left feeling frustrated.
So what does this have to do with “Chunking”? Let me explain. You may have heard the old adage “How do you climb a mountain? One step at a time!” Well this is an example of chunking. If you want to get to the top of Mount Everest you can’t just think your way there. You have to spend time planning a route, gathering the necessary supplies and assistance; it would be a good idea to check the weather conditions. But most importantly you have to put one foot in front of the other and take the first step, then the next step, then the one after that. The reality is that any team that has successfully made it to the top has also set up camps along the way. Meaning that, they didn’t attempt to do it in one straight climb. That would surely bring on hardship. They broke the task down into manageable chunks.
This is how any large scale goal is accomplished, in small incremental steps. So here it is; if you really want to improve your life, spend time with yourself, and figure out what you really want. Take time to find out the best means of achieving that end result, consult with someone who has done it before. Then break the journey down into small manageable chunks.
In the ancient days of Martial Arts training there were no coloured sashes or belts. But the journey seemed to daunting for many who began the adventure. The rank system serves to provide the student with incremental goals that never seem too far off in the distance. Remember accomplish your goals by taking one step at a time while always keeping the end result in mind.
Quantum Biofeedback Therapy
Ancient Healing Meets Modern Technology
By Rodney S Bhally, CMD, QBS, Lic. Ac

If you are familiar with the eastern philosophy of medicine, you made have heard or read somewhere that “our outer reality is a mirror of our inner reality” or “we become what we think about” and “we are what we eat”. Doctors, scientists, and professors of today have now welcomed these proven philosophies through the evolution of science from Newtonian Physics to Quantum Physics. This has redefined reality, shifted the old paradigm of our body as a machine. It has given us new insights, understanding and awareness of our body as atoms made up of fluctuations of energy in a field of energy and information (intelligence). It is the interaction of this energy that creates mind and matter. This is the basis for Quantum Healing.
Volta, Ampere, Ohm and other early scientists determined that biochemical processes in live organisms were fundamentally electrical in nature – made up of interacting energy fields. Modern scientific theory maintains electromagnetic oscillations (vibrations, frequencies) are not just carriers of the body’s information but are information itself. Biofeedback involves amplifying harmonic/healthy oscillations (frequencies) and inverting disharmonic oscillations. When this information is fed back to the body, the inverted waves cancel out the disharmonic waves, harmonizing and balancing the body’s energetic field. Also increasing their resonant frequency amplitude in the same way that a high intensity pitch would shatter glass, in the same way it would destroy pathogens, viruses or bacteria resonating at specific frequencies. This is not only healing, but also preventative, a dis-eased tendency can be neutralized before it physically manifests. Quantum Biofeedback allows for the body to heal itself. The body does not necessarily need drugs or chemicals instead it uses lost or new information to create healing.
Now used all over the world and especially in Europe is a Quantum Biofeedback Device known as the EPFX/SCIO. This device was recently registered with Health Canada as a Medical Device. It scans the body like a virus-scan on a computer. It detects Viruses, Allergies, Bacteria, Nutritional Deficiencies, Toxicities, Hormonal Imbalances, Parasites, Organs and Muscle problems, Emotional blockages, Brain Wave patterns, Chakras/Energetic Blockages, Mental Stress, Learning Difficulties and many more tendencies. The most exciting news is that the EPFX/SCIO offers over one hundred Stress Reduction Therapies that benefit the client during the session. Some of these well-known therapies include: Electro-Acupuncture Meridian Therapy, Homeopathic Activation, Allergy Testing and Desensitization, Spinal Energetic Adjustment, Chakra Balancing, Homotoxicology, Anti-Aging, Nuero-Emotional Correction/Addictions,
Blood Treatment, Sports Performance and Degeneration Therapy.
The purpose of this device is to engage your body’s electrical frequencies in an unconscious biofeedback process, healing and correcting imbalances via the subconscious process of the being. The EPFX/SCIO is built to interface with your unconscious versus your conscious brain. This allows you to increase awareness of subconscious cues, behaviours and mental states that create dis-ease. You will begin to expand your consciousness to re-create optimum health and wellness in your life.
Community Service
You may have noticed that we like to provide our students with opportunities to become more involved with the community that they are a part of. We offer teenagers the chance to fulfill their educational volunteer requirements by helping with the Brampton Parks Spring Clean-Up, the Peel Police Race Against Racism along with the Parks and Recreation special events that we help to promote throughout the Summer months. We encourage our students to become involved in their community which helps to improve their sense of connection to the city and as a result their self-esteem.
What you may not know is that we are always looking for more opportunities to get involved and make a difference within our community. If you are interested in arranging an appearance for a group that you may be involved with then please contact our office.
We are available for: Self-Defence Training-for kids groups like Beavers, Cubs and Girl Guides, Big Brothers’ and Sisters’, women’s groups or seniors groups.
Team Building Workshops-for sales teams, sports clubs and community service groups.
High-Impact Adventure Camping Trips-for educational purposes or just for the experience itself.
If you belong to or know of a group that might be interested in exploring how the martial arts’ could benefit their organization then please call our office to arrange a meeting. Please call 905.452.7150 and ask for Mr. Cann or Mr. Lugsdin

Only the Dedicated Succeed
There is no quick fix to life’s many trials and tribulations. Any reward or endeavour worthy of praise requires in turn, a worthy person to achieve it. The road to success carries many adversaries, many challenges and obstacles that test our metal and force us to “rise to the occasion”. None of these adversaries are more powerful than our own selves.
A wise man once said that “nothing is anything until we make it something”. Things are only hard when we label it as such. When we say “I can’t” we instantly convince ourselves that we can’t do something and sabotage our corresponding efforts! The key is to be aware of the things we say and choose to use words that will bring us closer to achieving our goals! Saying things like, "That was hard but I did it!" or, "It will take some effort but I’m going for it! Or I’m not giving up until I have that Black Sash around my waist!" These are all words and phrases that will motivate us to continue through our challenges and achieve our goals and that is the key. Most often a lot of us are just about to see victory only to give up at the last second just before our dreams are realized.
The thread runs a little deeper though. It is not only the words we use that are responsible for our actions and ultimately our success, it is in our very thought processes that can make or break us. Every personal growth book or spiritual text says that our minds, bodies and spirits are connected; this being true, one can also devise that how we think ultimately dictates how we act and how we feel.
If the consistency of ones thoughts are primarily negative then that person will act in a way that mirrors that negativity and the results will probably not be all that desirable. However the same goes for positive thinkers. If one puts out positive “vibes” or thoughts, then they will act in a way that conveys this energy. They are more outgoing, more approachable and they come together to elevate each other to higher levels of success.
Good thinking leads to doing good things and in the end, only good can happen. I heard a great quote and it states that “Struggle is optional.” Challenges may come up. Life may happen. But it is the same for everyone, is it not? We can’t control everything that happens to us but we can control how we choose to view the situation and how we react to it. What we think and say can be related to fishing. If we send out bad stuff, we will not have a quality catch. But if we have good quality line and a great lure, then our prize will be well worth the effort. As the saying goes,"Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.”
Knowing this little secret is one thing, but as one of my teachers told me, knowledge alone is not power; it is the application of knowledge that leads to power. So you may be asking yourself “What do I do now, today, that will motivate me to higher levels of success? Well the answer is simple. Surround yourself with people who have what you are looking for. Hang out with successful and wealthy individuals or organizations, get together with loving, caring individuals and you will soon start to model what they do. Energy is contagious. The attitude of wealth is contagious. Enthusiasm is contagious. Success is contagious, so hang out with people who lift you up, read positive material, and watch uplifting movies or T.V shows. Be what you want more of; be abundant with energy, enthusiasm and joy. Be abundant with positive thoughts and actions.

Requisite Variety
This is a principle that one of my teachers taught me about 7 years ago. When I first learned this principle it helped me to recognize and realize how many opportunities came my way and how many possible outcomes there were in any one situation. Now my understanding of this principle has improved greatly and my ability to apply it continues to benefit my life everyday. So what is it? Well the principle of “Requisite Variety” reads like this: In any situation, the element with the most flexibility ultimately controls the outcome of that situation.
So, why is this in your Kung Fu newsletter? Well, let me explain. In learning the Basic movements in our system of Kung Fu you may find that the ‘Keys’ may be taught differently from one week to the next. You may also find that each instructor gives different suggestions about how each move could be applied in a ‘Real-Life’ situation. This is because in ‘Real-Life’ it is very hard, if not impossible, to predict how any given situation will unfold. Believing ahead of time that you can predict the outcome of a particular scenario could be your downfall in that moment. Conversely being free and open in the moment allows you the chance to react and adjust to the events as they unfold in real time.
Imagine you are confronted by someone and find yourself in a Self-Defence situation. If you decide ahead of time that you are going to block the first strike with a Spear Block and the first punch thrown is an uppercut, you would very quickly regret your hasty decision. Practicing ‘Requisite Variety’ would allow you to stay open to the situation and react with the appropriate block or counter strike.
So how do you practice and apply this principle to your training here? Well the answer to that is fairly simple. Practice variety in the application of the techniques that you learn in class. Ask your instructors to show you different ways to apply what you are learning. Train your weak side more often, this will allow you to use both arms and legs extremely effectively. Switch stance when you practice at home. Most importantly, don’t be locked in to on train of thought. Expand your mind and expand your possibilities.
How you do anything is how you do………! And keeping that in mind I strongly encourage you to apply this principle to all areas of your life; your business transactions, your career path, your family life and your intimate relationships. Being flexible allows you to be aware of and capitalize on opportunities that you might not otherwise notice. Being flexible will make your life a more comfortable fit for you and the ones you love.

Killer Instinct
Well we are now in the middle of the summer season and hopefully not getting tiresome of the hot weather. A lot of us look forward to this time, to enjoy the outdoors more and plan more fun events overall. We also tend to feel and get a little sluggish when it comes to our training. Taking some time off is okay, however be careful of developing or succumbing to the natural laziness that you may feel. Stay consistent with your two classes per week, drinks lots of water and push through the heat. Also look forward to more outdoor classes.

This ability to be ruthless and brutal if necessary must be developed slowly and responsibly over time. It must be tempered by common sense and good character
|
One thing I would like to see more of, and I not
ice many people have a hard time with this when learning self-defence is “combative intent” or “your killer instinct”. Think of it as another self-defence technique. It is not so much as an instinct for killing as an ability to be serious, fierce and brutal if necessary.
Having good skill is obviously important, but in some situations you must be willing to do what it takes and go to that extra level. Being ruthless goes against many peoples nature and is not raised to be ruthless or violent. This is how it should be, however when your life is being threatened or you need to help someone you love this type of intent is often a requirement. For many, when they are able to get into this frame of mind it frightens them. The ability to control and use it when necessary is absolutely required, is vital.
One way to start training this mindset is to imagine you are in a situation where the life of someone you really love is being threatened. Someone is trying to hurt them in the most violent, gruesome way. Now imagine the amount of strength, courage fierceness and ruthlessness you are must have in order to save the life of that person you love. This may sound like too much, but this will prove to be a useful skill to have the more you practice and become comfortable with have that “killer instinct”. Don’t limit yourself!
"There is nothing training cannot do. Nothing is above its reach. It can turn bad morals to good; it can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones; it can lift men to angelship."

Quantum Medicine takes the whole person into consideration, that is Spiritual Well Being, Emotional Balance as well as Physical and Mental Health. It is finding out what is being depleted in the body and what affects it, whether it is the mind, body or spirit of the person. It is then looking at the very structure of the molecular make up. It is that which is very often beyond that of the senses and a kind of knowledge that comes with from the subconscious mind or even intuition that things are misaligned.
We all have this kind of knowledge, this deep insight into when we are not able to define that the body is not completely well. Usually the body, given time, will heal itself, if not abused by unhealthy environment, behaviours and substances.
Surgery, drugs and various other methods of medical treatment, attempt to set the stage in the body, where in the natural healing forces, laws of nature, or the universe, can more effectively and readily heal the body. Medical doctors set the stage for healing. They cooperate in the healing process, but do not of themselves heal. The operative laws of nature contained within universal consciousness do the actual healing. Thus, medical and quantum healing are not in conflict. Medical treatment helps in preparing the body for healing, while quantum bio-feedback treatments direct universal consciousness’ to do the actual healing.
It is better to try and understand what makes the body, which normally is so intelligent and in balance, bring about a state of dis-ease. When we breathe for instance we use 280 million molecules of haemoglobin, each of which picks up 8 atoms of oxygen. The lungs use a quart of blood in order to take breath. In a quart of blood there are 5 trillion of red blood cells. The whole process is therefore on such a grand scale, it is difficult to imagine with what precision the body keeps itself in balance.
It is really amazing that we have been able to discover so much about the how the body works. Unfortunately what is happening amidst this knowledge is that we have forgotten how the experience of life itself affects people. As Professor Eric Cassel always used to say, when the doctor asks you questions, he does not ask with a view to knowing what the matter is but rather what symptoms do you have and where do these symptoms fit in with what disease.
In Quantum Medicine we would ask ‘what is it that makes you ill?’ In this field of medicine we are looking at the psychological, emotional as well as physical reason on illness and thus finding the truth and root cause of why the disease is there in the first place.
“True health radiates in your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance. A freshness of spirit is seen in one's smile, color of skin, posture, expression, and communication with others. Peaceful thinking results in peaceful being, they’re inextricably tied.”

Tips on Staying Young
- Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.
- Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
- Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
- Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
- The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
- Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, and hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
- Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
- Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.
- Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
And Always Remember:
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” --George Carlin
The Paradox of Our Time
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.
It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom; a time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.
Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember; say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.
Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
